"In this volume Sir John Barrow gives an account of his voyage to Vietnam, while on his way to China as a member of the Macartney Embassy. It was first published in 1806 and was received with great interest and was quickly translated and published in French. It became one of the best known sources for information on Vietnam at the time.

Just under a quarter of the book's text relates to Vietnam, with roughly another quarter on Java with chapters on the islands of Madeira, Teneriffe, St. Jago, Rio de Janeiro, the Brazils, Tristan da Cunha, the island of Amsterdam, as well as an Annex which describes a quite separate journey through southern Africa."
