Colour woodblock folding sugoroku sheet, 38 x 52cm. A very good bright copy.

This charming sugoroku game sheet, probably from the Meiji period, depicts the floats and the parade participating in Nagoya's largest festival in Nagoya, the Toshogu Festival Parade. The festival began in 1618 to commemorate Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founding father of the Tokugawa government which ruled Japan for over 200 years. Nagoya always had strong and long relationships with the Tokugawa family and the festival continues to be held in Nagoya every April to this day.

Each year the parade starts at Nagoya Castle and finishes at the Toshogu Shrine as it does on this sugoroku. Some communities in Nagoya present special floats which depict famous historical episodes, and the participants dress in historical costume. This sugoroku sheet features several floats and members of the parade dressed in period costume.
