These scrapbooks include over 250 black and white photographs, 6 rubber stamp samples, 4 metal stamp samples, 70 items of ephemera ranging from brochures (including some in English), a few letters and manuscripts or typescripts in English, Japanese and German and some small images and logos clipped from magazines and other printed publications.

Pages browned and chipped, some browning and staining, a number of photographs and stamps are now loose and some are missing. Bindings worn with loss particularly along joints, the words "Scrap Book" on the upper cover of each album appear upside down as the scrapbooks were put together by a Japanese person and open the other way around, albums have been well used but are still sound. A very interesting and unique collection of Japanese printing trade history.

These two scrapbooks provide a captivating narrative of the evolution of a Japanese printing business in Tokyo during the 1950s, as overseen by Hoshino Kiyomi. Through a collection of photographs and samples of print blocks, they offer a glimpse into the early stages of development in an industry that would later gain a stellar reputation for printing quality in Japan.

Hoshino's initiative involved importing printing technology from the United States, incorporating plastic print blocks and printing machines into his operations. Williamson and Co. in New Jersey emerged as a key trading partner in this venture. The scrapbooks house a wealth of brochures in English, focusing on plastic print block production and the manufacturing of rubber stamps. The numerous black-and-white photographs chronicle the progress and advancements of the company through the adoption of this new technology.

Notably, Hoshino diversified the business by entering the field of rubber stamps, a move prompted by the growing demand for stamps in Japanese business and bureaucratic processes. The scrapbooks suggest that Hoshino innovated new types of rubber stamps, allowing for the interchangeable use of numbers and words. This innovation was acknowledged by the government, which granted new industrial utility licenses for these products, underscoring the entrepreneurial spirit and ingenuity of Hoshino Kiyomi during this pivotal era.
