"[The itinerant barber]...shaves the head, cleans the ears, arranges the eyebrows; and following a custom, universally established in Asia, to animate the circulation of the blood, and to give more suppleness to the limbs and muscles, he pulls them, extends them, rubs them, and with a light hand strikes them with gentleness: multiple operations, which he executes for a few miserable copper coins..." [descriptive text from George Henry Mason, "The Costume of China..." first published in 1800]
