2 volumes of 3. 62 woodblock printed folded leaves, many black and white woodblock illustrations throughout by Hokusai, some full page. Stamps or seals on first and last leaves of each volume neatly obscured with black ink. Wear and some light soiling lower corners, very occasional insect damage, considerably worn paper covers differ in colour, faded title labels, ink annotation lower covers. Contents generally good to very good.

Volumes 2 and 3 of an Edo Period educational text first published in 1828. This "Illustrated Book of Domestic Customs" was one of a number of general primers used for childhood education, containing a range of information about everyday life activities including poems to celebrate the seasons, the names of foodstuffs, ways of treating illnesses, crime prevention and other matters. This edition is illustrated with woodblock prints by the celebrated Japanese printmaker Katsushika Hokusai. The lively illustrations depict (amongst other things) scenes of fishing, noodle making, horseriding and harvesting wild foods (though the images are not always very closely related to the text content which they accompany). As well as being fine examples of Hokusai's popular work, these volumes give a vivid picture of the sort of education provided in the little 'temple schools' (teragoya) which provided basic schooling for commoners in Edo Period Japan.
