(circa 1910). Stock ID #180644

Group of 21 gelatin silver photographs mostly 8 x 10cm format, some 13.5 x 8.5cm, mounted on 3 double sided album pages, from a disbound album. Handwritten captions identify some people in the photographs. All in good condition. Page size is 30 x 25.5cm.

A fascinating set of black and white photos of Malaya circa 1914, laid down on light card album leaves which are delightfully decorated with delicate little original paintings.

Most of the photos appear to have been taken in the Negeri Sembilan area, just south of Kuala Lumpur, and feature European colonial residents in Malaya. One of the people in the photos is identified as "W. Hingston", of the Hingston family who owned a plantation in the area. Along with other relatives, he was a member of the Negeri Sembilan Planters' Association at that time. Another, identified as "P. K. P." may be P. K. Paul, who ran a plantation in nearby Kajang.

A page labelled "The Bukit Itam Men's Pic-Nic" shows a group of men with Malay assistants cooking in the jungle, and has been decorated with images of ladles and cooking pots. Another page contains four photos of European women in the jungle, including one woman being carried in a palanquin by Malay bearers. In the centre of this page is a small painting of a Malay mosque. A page which includes a photograph of Malay villages outside a palm-thatched hut is accompanied by paintings of Malay people engaged in various tasks including farming and weaving.

The creator of the album was a woman, whose image is included but is simply labelled 'self'. She was most likely a member of one of the planter families and was clearly an accomplished photographer as well as a good amateur artist.
