Black and white illustrations in the text, 55 double folded leaves, paper title label upper cover, Japanese string binding, 22.5 x 15cm. Early owner's name in Chinese characters and in awkward English long hand appears on front and back covers as well as pastedowns with a childish pencil drawing lower pastedown, some browning and thumbing throughout. A used but sound and interesting textbook.

The Shintai (New Style) Reader was a Japanese language textbook that combined reading, composition, and calligraphy as a single subject. Interestingly, its layout featured the title, volume number, page number, and publisher in parentheses in the upper left corner of each page, with newly learnt Chinese characters listed in the headers. The reader was termed a "new style" reader because it employed a more contemporary form of speech. Published shortly after Japan's victory in the First Sino-Japanese War, its content was engaging, encompassing subjects such as the geography of Taiwan, ports involved in overseas trade, the conclusion of the war, and whaling. This textbook represents a valuable resource for understanding how these topics were presented to children at the time. In Japan, oral reading was considered an important method for reinforcing memory, and since it received approval from the Ministry of Education, it offers insight into the government's desired approach to teaching these particular subjects.
