Volume 2 only (of 10 volumes). 25 folded leaves of colour woodblock prints - 43 full page and 2 double page some highlighted in silver or gold, some protective sheets, 5 folded leaves with title and preliminary text, a page of text at rear and publisher's details. 25 x 17.3cm, blind embossed paper wrappers, title label, stab binding. Light soiling to covers, interior in very good condition.

The full series comprised 10 volumes was published between 1891 and 1923; six of them illustrated by Shimizu Seifu and four by the artist Nishizawa Tekiho after Shimizu's death. The brilliant colours and simplicity of many of the toys contribute to an extraordinarily engaging picture book, of interest in its documentation of Japanese playthings. Shimizu Seifu was an avid collector and expert on Japanese toys.
