大日本雄弁会講談社. [Dainihon Yubenkai Kodansha]. Showa 30 [ 1955.]. Stock ID #213688

Three volumes in original pictorial card covers, attractive full page colour illustrations throughout. Light even browning, a little very light shelf wear, one spine a trifle discoloured, overall very good. 25.7 x 18cm.

Three volumes (nos. 19, 25 and 35) from the "Kodansha Picture Books" (Kōdansha no Ehon) series, a series of illustrated children's picture books re-telling well-known Japanese folk tales, published between 1948 and 1958 (these three volumes all appeared in 1955). The colourful pictures by popular illustrators Kamoshita Chōko (Shitakiri Suzume - Tongue-Cut Sparrow), Saitō Ioe (Momotarō) and Ikawa Sengai (Sarukani Kassen - the Battle of the Monkeys and the Crabs) are classic examples of postwar Japanese children's illustration, and the stories (retold in a style suitable for primary school students) are among the most enduringly popular of Japanese children's folk tales.
