This map was published in March 1941—nine months before the Pacific War began — by Nihon Hōsō Kyōkai (present-day NHK, Japan's national broadcaster) for its radio listeners. Its primary purpose was to help listeners identify place names and locations. An inset map in the top right displays southern Malaya, Singapore, Sumatra, and western Java. Although Hawaii is not included, the area covered by the map strikingly corresponds with the theatre of the Pacific War fought between Japan and the Allies. Additionally, an inset chart indicates the sources of natural resources such as iron ore and oil, while the legends denote the locations of agricultural produce, mineral resources, and oil.
