Japanese Handcoloured Photographs.
(Circa 1880). Stock ID #214358 A beautiful little album of hand-tinted photographs, dating from about the 1880s. The photos show kimono-clad Japanese women engaged in entertainments or posed in studio settings. Albums like this were produced by Meiji Era Japanese photographic studios as souvernirs for foreign visitors. This collection includes 'Girls Reading Letter', from the studio of the renowned photographer Kusakabe Kimbei, and 'Girls Dancing with Fan', possibly by Suzuki Shinichi, alongside a number of less well-known works which we have not been able to trace the studio of origin for. These include: 71. Geisha Playing at Go (Draughts); 23. Playing Samisen, Tsuozumi & Taiko; and 104. Girls Reading Letter . One charming example re-creates a river scene, with two women posed in a studio boat while their companions (one of them smoking a pipe) sit on the 'bank' behind under the branches of a cherry tree. Twelve handcoloured small Japanese photographs presented in a delightful small Japanese lacquer accordion style album. The upper cover of the album features a tranquil scene of a Japanese lady casting a net from the boat in which she is sitting, an oarsman behind her and Mt Fuji in the background. The photographs are a little faded with red colours somewhat heightened, card leaves, endpapers and tissue guards a little foxed. Some wear along edges of boards. Nevertheless this album is still a charming and attractive piece.
