我が南洋貿易と回教徒. [Waga Nanyō bōeki to Kaikyōto].
[Our South Sea Trade and Muslims].
東京. [Tokyo]. 大日本回教協會. [Dainihon Kaikyō Kyōkai]. Showa14 [ 1939]. Stock ID #214569 This fascinating 1939 publication from the Greater Japan Islamic Association (大日本回教協会) outlines trade relations between Japan and Islamic regions in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Malaya, Java, and the Moros of the Philippines. It argues that understanding the Muslims in Southeast Asia is crucial for developing and expanding trade relations with Japan. The emphasis of the pamphlet is strongly pragmatic. Its authors point out that much of Japan's trade in Southeast Asia to date has been with members of the Chinese minority in the region, but since the outbreak of full-scale war with China, Japanese businesses have faced boycotts from some Chinese traders, and it is crucial to develop a wider market among the very large Muslim populations of the Dutch East Indies, Malaya and other parts of the region. But they also urge their Japanese readers to overcome their prejudicial view of Southeast Asians as 'backward', and they provide a brief outline of political issues including the rise of nationalist ideas in Indonesia, and anti-colonial activism by the Moro population of the Philippines.
