This map of Antarctica was published around 1956, coinciding with Japan's establishment of its first research station at Prince Harald Coast. The Japanese research unit arrived in the area in January 1957. The map illustrates the planned sailing route to Prince Harald Coast via Cape Town and details the routes taken by past explorers, including Shirase, to reach Antarctica. Additionally, it indicates the locations of research bases established by other countries, including the United States, Argentina, Australia, the Soviet Union, Britain, and France.
