Tipped in black and white and colour photographs (199 photographs in total) in 4 albums, 10 loose black and white photographs, 1 loose colour photograph and several business cards and newspaper clippings are included, some annotations in both Japanese and English. 2 albums are the self adhesive type commonly used at this period. A few photographs loose or missing, light browning endpapers and some wear to two of the albums but overall very good.

A rare and substantial visual record of Japan–Australia diplomatic relations during the early 1970s, centred on the career of Yoshida Kenzo, who served as Japanese Ambassador to Australia from 1973 to 1976. The core material documents his inaugural visit to Western Australia in April 1974, at a pivotal moment when Japan’s imports of Australian mineral resources were expanding rapidly. The photographs record official receptions, public events, and meetings with Australian political and civic figures, offering direct visual evidence of diplomacy at work in Australia during a formative period of bilateral engagement.

The remaining albums place this Australian material in broader context, recording Yoshida’s earlier service as Consul-General in Honolulu and his later postings as Ambassador to Brazil and China. Taken together, the albums provide a valuable primary source for the study of Australia’s postwar international relations and Japan’s expanding presence in the Asia–Pacific region.
