Stock ID #215639 A finely bound copy of this survey of Indian history by Mountstuart Elphinstone 1779-1859, a Scottish statesman and historian associated with the government of British India. He was a noted administrator, becoming Lieutenant Governor of Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1819 where he is credited with promoting popular education and the local administration of laws; opening several educational institutions accessible to the Indian population. He twice refused appointment as Governor-General of India, famously preferring to complete this History instead, first published in 1841 in two volumes. Large folding map, xxii + 687pp. 21.5 x 13.5cm. Contemporary full tan calf, gilt-ruled, spine elaborately gilt in compartments with raised bands, moss green title label, marbled edges and endpapers, early owner's inscription (London 1853) on the flyleaf, preliminaries and a few leaves at the end toned and spotted, overall a good copy in a very attractive nineteenth-century binding.
