Large colour copper print map, 72 x 92cm, inset illustrations, some darkening and small holes few small holes at fold points, prior and recent repairs along folds in washi on the reverse. Some light general browning and wear still an attractive copy of a scarce map.

This early Meiji-era world map displays the eastern and western hemispheres, with additional spheres depicting the Arctic and Antarctic in the upper corners. Along the lower edge, inset illustrations present examples of marine charts and coastal geographical features. The map highlights major countries and their capitals.

Nagata Hosei, the map’s creator, was an educator in Osaka, compiling textbooks and teaching materials. This map likely served as an inspiring resource for students. Nagata later relocated to Hokkaido, where he taught at various schools and conducted research on the Ainu language. He is also credited with producing Japan’s first summary translation of the Bible.
