Large colour folding sugoroku game, 93 x 125cm. Some repairs on the reverse, pin holes at corners and lower corner a little chipped. Overall very good.

This unique and visually rich sugoroku-style educational chart was published in 1927 in Shizuoka by Yamamura Azusa. Intending to present Japanese history through the lens of the imperial lineage, Yamamura sought to make the subject accessible and engaging for children by structuring it as a game. Using the familiar sugoroku board format, he transforms historical chronology into a path of progress, starting with the mythological creation of Japan by the sun goddess Amaterasu at the centre of the chart.

From this divine origin, the game proceeds through 178 sections, each marking a notable point in imperial history, culminating in the early years of the Shōwa era. The imperial year system (皇紀) is used throughout, reinforcing the central theme of imperial continuity. Yamamura notes that he initially designed the game for his own children, but, encouraged by endorsements from respected academics, he published it for a wider audience, hoping to foster historical awareness and national pride among young learners.
