Hong Kong. 1952- 1953. Stock ID #217444

63 black and white photographs, mounted on folding stiff foolscap leaves (bifolium, the leaves a little bowed) captioned in T. W. Burdon's hand, (two loose), ranging in size from: half page 13.5 x 18.5cms; three to a page 8.5 x 13cms; or smaller (5 or 6 to a page) 6 x 8.2cms, as well, 14 strips of thumbnail photographs (Kodak panchromatic film) mounted on three leaves, together with an extensive album of negatives in cellophane envelopes, the red-bound album 15.5 x 30cms with stud closure, the photographs unfaded and crisp in very good condition.

A collection of original photographs (1952-3), documenting commercial fishing in Hong Kong from the collection of Thomas Wilkinson Burdon (1918-1988) who served as Deputy Director of Fisheries in Singapore and Malaysia from 1949-1954. The photographs are captioned and dated in Burdon’s hand and include montages relating to the Aberdeen, Kowloon and Tai-Po fish markets, as well as images of fishing boats and net repair in Sai Kung in the New Territories.

The quality of the photographs speak to Burdon’s skill as a gifted amateur photographer: the photographs are not only of technical interest, but have considerable visual appeal, particularly the studies of sampans in Hong Kong Harbour.
