Stock ID #217476 First edition of this first-hand account of the suppression of the Iban people in 1843-44 by Sir James Brooke, Rajah of Sarawak, Keppel, and other commanders of the British ships of war. After meeting James Brooke in Singapore, Captain Henry Keppel took the Rajah to the coast of Sarawak to engage in a campaign against the Iban who were accused of piracy. Two Volumes. 6 folding black and white maps, 11 plates, folding table and a publisher's catalogue at the rear of each volume dated December 1845. 22 x 14cm. Volume I: xii + 338pp + xxviii, appendix. The map of the Island of Lubuan repaired on the margins. Volume II. viii (i) + 230pp + cii, appendix. Both volumes recased in tan half linen spines with cloth covered boards lettered in gilt on the spines and new endpapers. A few stamps of S. Shepheard - British Hotel Cairo in both volumes, some light age toning to edges and some light foxing to maps with occasional spotting to plates mainly to the margins. Overall, a very good firm set of the first edition.
