Stock ID #217774 Lithograph after a Japanese woodblock prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan...". In March 1854 Perry had won the access to the Japanese ports of Shimoda and Hakodate for American vessels, with the signing of the Kanagawa Treaty, effectively beginning a process of opening Japan to the West. Coloured lithograph 21.8 x 35.3cms; 29 x 43.6cms (sheet), marginal toning with a couple of minor chips and spotting, original folds, but the image clean and unmarred in very good condition.
