Stock ID #217947 The banning of Wu Han's operatic play "Hai Rui Dismissed From Office" is thought to be the spark that ignited the Cultural Revolution and the rise of the Gang of Four. In the play, Hai Rui's criticism of the Emperor was understood as an allegory for Peng Dehuai criticising Mao about the Great Leap Forward during the Lushan Conference in 1959. This led to Peng Dehuai being purged. This volume features information around the topic, including chapters exposing Wu Han as a counter-revolutionary, and his connections with other anti-communists such as Hu Shi.
