This vintage sugoroku game offers a captivating glimpse into Japan's keen public interest in Antarctic exploration during the late 1950s. Published as a supplement to a children's newspaper issued by the Asahi Shimbun, it was released around July 1957 to coincide with the launch of Japan's first Antarctic expedition, part of the International Geophysical Year (IGY).

The sugoroku charts the expedition's journey from Japan to Antarctica, with stops in Singapore and Cape Town. It combines adventure with education, featuring scientific insights such as information about the Aurora Australis. The final panel depicts two children celebrating the mission's success alongside a penguin, proudly holding an Asahi flag and a Hitachi transistor radio — a nod to the sponsors and the technological optimism of the era.
