Colour woodblock pictorial map, 37.7 x 150cm unfolded, 19.2 x 8.5cm folded. Some abrasion of paper surface on covers, insect damage neatly repaired with washi on reverse, some holes at folds, a little staining but overall still a very pleasing map.

This colour woodblock pictorial map was published in 1849 and covers from the northern end of Honshu to Kyushu, including surrounding islands. The main travelling and pilgrimage routes, including Tokaido and Hokuriku Kaido, are marked in yellow with their post town names listed along the routes. Castle towns are noted in yellow and major temples and shrines are marked as well. Sea routes between the islands are marked in lines, as numerous boats are travelling on the sea. Places where checkpoints are located are also marked. An inset charts show distances between post towns and the cost of horse hire.

Even though Japan was generally regarded as a closed nation to the West during the Edo period, this map gives an impression of a vibrant country where travelling, at least within its borders, was enjoyed.
