This Malay language teaching book was originally published in 1937 and became very popular. The 7th print of 5000 copies was published in May 1942, a few months after Japan occupied Malaya and Singapore. The book covers grammar, spoken and written Malay in 28 chapters. Tokugawa Yoshichika learned the language under his co-author, Asakura Sumitaka and writes in the foreword that it is important to learn to speak correctly and properly in Malay, particularly for those who want to work in Southeast Asia. Tokugawa Yoshichika was known as an intelligent and out-of-the-ordinary aristocrat in the early 20th century. He visited Malaya twice before the Pacific War and engaged in tiger hunting. Thus he was known as a tiger-hunting lord in Japan. He was also involved in the occupation policy during the Japanese occupation of Malaya and Singapore and was based in Singapore between 1942 and 1944.
