[Japan]. No date. Stock ID #219048

Colour painting mounted in the traditional style of Japanese hanging scrolls with striped raw silk border, 210 x 54.8cm. A single futai (decorative silk streamer) hangs from the top, lacks the left futai, washi repairs where wooden roller joins the scroll. A delightful image in good condition.

This is a classic style Bijinga painting (美人画, painting of a beautiful woman) by Torii Kiyonobu (鳥居清宣). He should not be confused with Torii Kinoyobu (1664-1729, 鳥居清信) who was the founding father of the Torii School style art. The standing woman wears a subdued dark colour kimono, but her gown is decorated with different patterns of fans in beautiful colours. It is clear from the cherry blossom petals on the ground that the season is spring. The painting is completed in delicate and fine colours and touches.
