This rare book on the atomic bombing of Nagasaki was published in 1949 during the Allied occupation of Japan. It contains a collection of essays written by employees of Nagasaki Seiki, a division of Mitsubishi Heavy Industry. The company’s factories suffered almost a direct hit, resulting in the deaths of over 2,000 employees and injuries to nearly 6,000 more.

The idea of publishing a collection of memoirs was first proposed on the first anniversary of the bombing in 1946, and the book was issued by the company in 1949. The contributors were factory workers who experienced the bombing firsthand, and several women also recorded their accounts. The first edition was probably printed in very limited numbers. Despite occupation censorship, the narratives appear largely unedited and convey genuine, personal experiences. The book was republished in 1988.
