京都. [Kyoto]. 竹原好兵衛. [Takehara Yosibei]. Tenpo 12 [ 1841]. Stock ID #219185 This black and white woodblock travel map, published in 1841, covers Japan from the northern reaches of Honshu to the southern tip of Kyushu. The cartographic layout is artistically stylised, with geographical outlines deliberately distorted to accommodate the full extent of Japan on a single sheet. Prominent natural landmarks, including Mt Fuji, Lake Biwa, and key rivers, are incorporated into the design. Post stations along the main travel routes, such as the Tokaido and Nakasendo, are marked with the distances between them, reflecting their importance for travellers of the period. Maritime routes between the islands are also indicated. The legend identifies various features including castle towns, lodgings, temples, and shipping lines. On the reverse side of the map, detailed information is provided for each station, including tariffs and horse hire charges, offering valuable insight into travel logistics during the late Edo period.
