東京. [Tokyo]. 毎日新聞社. [Mainichi Shinbunsha]. Showa 24 [ 1949]. First Edition. Stock ID #219362 This largely pictorial 1949 Japanese publication on the United States was issued as a supplementary reader for a high school social studies course. It introduces students to the vast land, industries, and cities of the United States through numerous photographic illustrations. The book places strong emphasis on American affluence and industrial advancement. Published while Japan was still under occupation, it clearly promotes the superiority of the United States over Japan in many respects. Historical relations between the two countries are almost entirely absent, apart from a brief mention of Matthew Perry’s 19th-century visit and the presence of Japanese migrants in California.
