Stock ID #219638 This fine wood block print by Utagawa Kunisato was most likely published in the 1850s and it depicts a procession scene at Kanda Festival. The print features several beautifully decorated floats pulled by community members of the Kanda Shrine followers. Each float has its own long tradition and distinctive design. Kanda Shrine is located in Tokyo and its bi-annual festival has been known as one of the three great festivals in Japan along with Gion Festival in Kyoto and Tenjin Festival in Osaka. Colour woodblock print, 36 x 25.7cm, a few neat paper repairs on reverse and paper a little thin in one tiny place upper left corner, otherwise a very good and striking colourful print.
Utagawa Kunisato (? - 1858) created ukiyo-e arts towards the end of Edo period. The publisher, Tsujioka Bunsuke, was active from the mid-19th century to early 20th century, and published many nishiki-e prints.
