Colour images printed on both sides of this folded sheet, 52.6 x 75.5cm, accompanied by the original envelope (27 x 19cm). Very good condition.

These double-sided identification charts of British and American warplanes and naval vessels were published in May 1942 by the Yomiuri Newspaper. The aviation chart illustrates nine US Army planes, ten US Navy planes, and sixteen British aircraft, each shown in front, side, and undercarriage views to aid recognition during air raids. The reverse presents silhouettes of US and British naval vessels, with annotations indicating those claimed to have been damaged or sunk by the Tripartite powers—Japan, Germany, and Italy—creating an impression of overwhelming Allied losses. Along the lower edge appear the flags of Japan, Nazi Germany, and Italy. Notably, the chart also includes the reported outcome of the Battle of the Coral Sea (4–8 May 1942), reflecting the Japanese Navy’s official version, which proved overly optimistic. Together, the charts capture a moment in the Second World War when the Tripartite powers were pressing their advantage and projecting confidence.
