Stock ID #219730 This series on the history of sumo wrestling by Mikawaya Jiemon is titled Origin of Sumo and features sumo ranking sheets (banzuke, 番付) dating from 1774 to 1853. This copy is the first volume of the series and covers the period from 1774 to 1801. The first volume was originally published in 1838, and the present example is from the second printing. Volume I only. Black and white woodblock art illustrations, 22 woodblock print sumo ranking sheets, 25.7 x 18cm, 26 double-folded leaves, paper title label upper cover, title label and covers insect damaged and a little marked.
During the late Edo period, Mikawaya held the exclusive right to publish sumo ranking sheets, and the firm clearly retained its own archive of these materials. In this opening volume, a brief overview of sumo history precedes the reproduced ranking sheets. The basic format of the banzuke is already firmly established here and has remained largely unchanged to the present day, making this volume of particular interest to followers and students of sumo history.
