壽寧待志 [Shouning daizhi].<BR> [Shouning Pending Gazetteer].
Fujian. 福建人民出版社. [Fujian renmin chubanshe]. 1983. Stock ID #219737 This is a unique historical and administrative text written by Ming Dynasty Chinese playwright and poet Feng Menglong 冯梦龙 during his tenure as a county magistrate in Shouning, Fujian Province (1634–1638). This gazetteer is more personal and critical than the formal records usually found in local gazetteers, because it was written as an unofficial, candid account of his experiences governing Shouning, and included information about taxes, legal cases, governance challenges, poverty, corruption, local customs, his frustrations, reforms, and humorous reflections. It reveals the real struggles of a low-ranking official during the Ming Dynasty. Feng called it a "daizhi" 待志 to suggest it was an unfinished, unofficial record.
