大阪. [Osaka]. 日本煙草雑誌社. [Nippon Tabako Zasshisha]. 1903. Stock ID #219759 The magazine, 日本煙草雑誌 [Nippon Tobacco Journal], was published as an industry journal between 1896 and 1905. This issue, Series 8, Issue 3, appeared in December 1903. Its principal subject is the proposal to make tobacco one of the government monopoly commodities. The government’s aim was to increase tax revenue in order to help fund the Russo-Japanese War. The tobacco industry was firmly opposed to this move, and the articles in this issue express strong resistance to government monopolisation. Despite this opposition, the monopoly was introduced in 1904, after which the production and sale of tobacco came under government control. When referring to this item please quote stockid 219759.
