Thirty two full page colour plates, ten monochrome photographic illustrations, black and white line illustrations in text throughout, 336pp, 18.8 x 12.8cm. Some largely even browning throughout, pictorial wrappers a little worn and browned, a good copy of a fascinating book.

This substantial Chinese cookbook was issued in November 1933 as a supplement to Fujin Kurabu (婦人倶楽部), a popular Japanese women’s magazine. Aimed at Japanese housewives, it introduces 300 Chinese dishes, along with descriptions of the necessary cooking utensils, ingredients, and methods.

The book opens with thirty-two pages of colour illustrations of Chinese dishes, followed by sixteen pages of black-and-white photographs explaining Chinese table manners. The recipes cover a wide range of foods, from wonton to meat and fish dishes.


All contributors were Japanese, with no involvement from Chinese writers or chefs. It is particularly striking to see such a comprehensive Chinese cookbook published at a time when military tensions between Japan and China were intensifying.
