An early plain paper edition in the Japanese Fairy Tale Series, this being the fifth in the series. This story was later dramatised by novelist and social reformer Mushanokoji Saneatsu (1885-1976) for use in non-traditional education in early 20th century Japan. Mushanokoji who was inspired by Tolstoy's use of fairy stories in education, used these stories to convey morals about the contrast between honest peasants and their exploiting enemies. Ten folded paper leaves (including pictorial wrappers) illustrated throughout with colour woodblocks. Traditional Japanese style binding with renewed (?) silk ties. Light wear at extremities, tiny area of insect damage lower cover but a very good copy.
