Colour photographic illustrations most with accompanying fabric samples, [223]pp, 36.5 x 26.7cm, cord ties. Corners bumped, a little minor wear along extremities, an attractive volume in very good condition.

This modern-style book on kimonos presents striking photographs of models wearing elegant kimonos in contemporary settings with small swatches of the fabric laid down alongside the image. The poses vary according to the age of the models: some wear traditional Japanese hairstyles, while others have modern hairdos or even short hair. A number are shown reclining on tatami mats in more relaxed, and at times suggestively posed, photographs. The volume appears to have been designed to appeal to a contemporary female clientele.

Each photograph is paired with a fabric sample, showing the richness of colours and weaving techniques.

The publication was issued by the Kyoto Atsurae Yūzen, a kimono producers’ association specialising in bespoke garments distinguished by their materials, dyes and sewing. Each kimono featured in the book would therefore have been a unique and costly commission. The association was dissolved in 2024, reflecting the broader decline in demand for kimonos..
