Scrapbook containing several hundred colour sake labels laid down, [107]pp, 30.1 x 22cm. Some leaves evenly browned but the labels are all in very good condition.

This is a beautifully presented collection of Japanese sake labels, consisting of over 100 pages, most with two or three labels neatly laid down, some with up to five labels on a page. The labels come from sake produced in Fukui, Niigata, Ishikawa and Gifu Prefectures. Each label is uniquely and beautifully designed with culturally significant symbols, including pine trees, cranes and blossoms. Interestingly, many incorporate the Latin alphabet, most likely in an effort to attract the attention of consumers. A surprising number of sake breweries existed in relatively small areas in Japan around that time. The scrapbook not only showcases interesting label designs, but also provides valuable information on the distribution of breweries in regional Japan.
