Stock ID #221075 First edition of Sir John Barrow's account of his voyage to Vietnam, while on his way to China as a member of the Macartney Embassy, (he dedicted the work to Sir George Staunton) and the first illustrated book in English on Vietnam. Just under a quarter of the book's text relates to Vietnam with chapters on the islands of Madeira, Teneriffe, St. Jago, Rio de Janeiro, the Brazils, Tristan da Cunha, the island of Amsterdam, Java, Batavia, as well as a supplementary chapter which describes a quite separate journey through southern Africa. The aquatint plates are particularly fine and contributed to the technical development and popularity of colour plate printing in early 19th-century publishing. Two folding maps and 18 aquatint plates (of 19, Plate I, the "View of Funchal in Madeira" present loose in facsimile), (i)-xviii, plate-list, 447 pp., 27.5 x 21.5 cms; contemporary calf with gilt banded spines and the emblem of the Northern Lighthouses Board at the head of the spine, sprinkled fore edges, offsetting to one of the maps, age-toning and the binding a little rubbed, but a handsome copy in very good condition.
