東京. [Tokyo]. 太田節次. [Ōta Setsuji]. Meiji 28 [ 1895]. Stock ID #221518

Black and white lithograph print on a 33 x 43.5cm light brown sheet, a few occasional tiny holes, occasional chips on margins, very good.

This 1895 lithograph by Ōta Setsuji depicts an early-summer scene at the foot of Mount Fuji, where a group of young girls are shown picking fresh tea leaves. The setting is Shizuoka, a region long associated with green-tea production, which expanded significantly during the Meiji period and continues to the present day. Although the scene is clearly idealised, the women’s kimonos are far too elegant for agricultural labour, the image successfully conveys a gentle, idyllic atmosphere. The girls carry baskets marked with the characters daikichi (大吉), meaning “great good fortune,” adding an auspicious note to this romanticised vision of rural life beneath Mount Fuji.
