Black and white woodblock folding sugoroku, 58.5 x 67cm. A few small holes and folds very neatly repaired with washi, signs of wear, original paper covers with title label. Good.

An Edo period sugoroku game, published in 1849 with squares providing moral lessons on virtues and vices. The illustrations are by the artist Kurokawa Gokusui, and the game was published in Kyoto and Osaka. Kurokawa flourished in the late Edo period and was known particularly for his woodblock illustrations and sugoroku.

Sugoroku became highly popular in the 1840s, and often featured moral or religious themes. This sugoroku's black-and-white illustrated squares feature images of virtues such as hard work, study and good etiquette, alongside pictures warning of the dangers of vices such as quarrelling, drunkenness and theft. It was a popular version of the game in its day, though it is difficult to tell whether the players took its moral precepts seriously.
