Folding frontispiece map (a trifle spotted) + 24 folding black and white plates and explanatory text, ii + 9pp, original thick cream title wrappers, 27.3 x 19.7 cms, the wrappers a little dusty, small split at the foot of the spine, but the text and plates in very good, unmarked condition.
With the presentation inscription from the author to the then US Ambassador to Japan John Armor Bingham (1815-1900) to the front free endpaper, and ownership inscription by Bingham on the title wrapper, together with the neat inscription of a later owner, David H. Stansbery (1926-2017), Professor Emeritus at the Ohio State University, Curator of the Ohio State Museum of Natural History, and a world-expert on freshwater molluscs (and a champion of their conservation).
