Stock ID #223129 A very good copy of this classic account by Maria Graham (née Dundas; 19 July 1785 – 21 November 1842) later Maria, Lady Callcott, a British writer of travel books and children's books, and an accomplished illustrator. The plates are all after original drawings by her and her lively account covers everything from flora and wildlife to Parsi theology and the daily routine of the Madras lady, and includes extensive descriptions and illustrations of her visits to the cave temples of Elephanta, Carli, and Canary, and the ancient city of Maliaballipooram. Handcoloured frontispiece and 15 black and white engraved plates (two large folding), vii + [i] Errata and Directions for Placing the Plates + 211 pp; contemporary half morocco over marbled boards, spine gilt lettered and decorated between raised bands 27 x 21.5 cms, with the binder's ticket of Wm. Spark, Exeter, the text age-toned, scattered foxing, affecting the margins of a few of the plates, small tear to the head of one leaf (no loss), with the 19th Century bookplate of Thomas Scott, Earlston with his manuscript shelfmark and his neat shelf label to the foot of the spine with the early inked inscription of "Anne Broderick (sp?) 1816 from her uncle Capn. Thomas Graham Royal Navy", a very good copy of the first edition.
Maria Graham's husband, Lieutenant Thomas Graham perished at sea in 1822 whilst the Grahams were en route to Chile.
Thomas Scott (1800-1855) was a surveyor and landowner who settled in Earlston, Tasmania.
