This booklet provides detailed information on a week-long pilgrimage to major Shinto shrines undertaken in 1932 and was distributed to one of the participants. The 465 members of the tour were drawn from local volunteer associations in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture.

Although described as a commemorative tour celebrating Japanese victories in the Sino-Japanese Incident, it was in fact the seventeenth pilgrimage of this kind.

The group assembled at Meiji Shrine on 20 May 1932 before departing on a carefully organised itinerary that took them from Tokyo to Ise, Nara, Kyoto and Nagoya, returning to Tokyo one week later. The participants were divided into smaller groups, each under the supervision of a group leader. The principal purpose of the journey was to pay respects at important Shinto shrines and imperial sites, including Ise Shrine, the imperial tombs in Kyoto and Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya, although sightseeing excursions in Nara and Kyoto were also included.



The booklet lists the names of all participants and records that a doctor and nurses accompanied the group throughout the journey. The scale of the organisation is particularly striking, given the size of the party and the demanding itinerary, with activities beginning at around six o’clock on most mornings. For many of those taking part, this ambitious pilgrimage must have been a memorable and important event in their lives
