[美人画掛軸. [Bijinga kakejiku]].<BR> [Scroll of a Japanese Courtesan and Craftsman].

[Japan]. (Circa 1910?). Stock ID #223680

Attractive colour painting on a scroll featuring a Japanese courtesan and a craftsman. 199 x 52.5cm. Scroll coming away from the lower roller at lower edges, left end fitting of lower roller is missing, decorative paper border at lower edge of painting lifting a little, a few mild creases and light browning. A lovely image.

A beautiful and colourful painting by Kadō (華堂), most likely Yoshioka Kadō (吉岡華堂, 1874–1917), who was active during the Meiji and Taishō periods. The signature and seal appear at the lower left.

The painting depicts a beautiful young courtesan standing in a brightly coloured kimono, while a craftsman gazes at her, seemingly completely enchanted. He has been carving a piece of wood, but has dropped his chisel and now stares at the woman. The painting vividly captures this moment of sudden fascination.
