Stock ID #223683 Magisterial survey of the Ajanta Caves in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state of India, comprising about 30 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments which date from the 2nd century BCE to about 480 or 650 CE. The caves include paintings and rock cut sculptures described as among the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art. The Archaeological Department of the Government of the Nizam of Hyderabad restored the Ajanta paintings in the 1920s, and commissioned E.L. Vassey to photograph them. His photographs form the basis of this monumental production, published over a period of 25 years, three of the four published parts represented here. Part I Text : folding map, xix + 55 pp. Portfolio I: 8 pp.+ plan + 40 plates (16 colour, 24 monochrome);
Part II Text : 9 plates, text illustrations, vii + 70 pp. Portfolio II: 8 pp. + plan + 49 plates (18 colour, 31 monochrome including plan);
Part IV Text : 5 plates, text illustrations, viii +130 pp. Portfolio IV: 13 pp. + 82 plates (17 colour, 65 monochrome).
Text volumes: original polished linen covered boards, 32.5 x 25.5 cms, gilt lettered with cover vignettes, dustjackets with mounted black and white photographic illustrations, the dustjacket for Part II slightly scuffed and slight silver-fishing to the dustjacket for Part IV, but in very good clean condition;
Portfolios: folding polished linen covered boards (all sunned and a little faded) 52 x 41.5 cms, gilt lettered with cover vignettes, with the original silk ribbon ties, that for Part IV with wear and chipping to the inner binding tape, a few plate margins a little age-toned, but in very good clean condition.
