This richly illustrated and engaging work examines cosmetics and the cosmetics trade during the Edo period. The author, Hanasaki Kazuo (1916–2010), was an independent researcher who wrote widely on many aspects of Edo culture; this was one of his early publications.

Focusing particularly on the period from the mid-18th century onwards, Hanasaki explores cosmetic shops, beauty products, shop signs and advertisements. Drawing on numerous Edo-period publications, he describes the products, shop fronts and customers of the time, illustrating his account with many reproductions from books and commercial signs. The work vividly demonstrates the rich variety of beauty products available in Edo Japan, and the extent to which consumer culture was already flourishing.
