Colour folding game, 45 x 61.5cm, light browning on reverse. Very good.

This game sheet was issued as a supplement to the December 1927 issue of Shōgakusei Zenshū (小学生全集). The publication was most likely sold by monthly subscription, as the complete series comprised 88 volumes, each devoted to a particular theme, including science and literature.

Although it is not clear exactly how this game was intended to be played, the colourful sheet offers a fascinating insight into material culture and consumer goods in 1920s Japan. The game was illustrated by Hosokibara Seiki (1885–1958), a popular cartoonist and illustrator, whose humorous caricatures enliven the sheet.

Ten categories of people are shown, including a girl, a boy, a doctor, a teacher and a policeman. Each type of person is associated with particular objects. For example, the girl has a watch, ribbon, shoes, parasol and sweet potatoes, while the teacher has a dictionary, suit, reading glasses, cane and furoshiki, a square wrapping cloth used here for carrying books.
