Colour folding sugoroku game sheet, counters along upper margin, 55 x 78.8cm, a few small holes at folds, a little blue ink smudged on left edge, but otherwise very good.

This vivid and entertaining sugoroku game was published in 1917, during the First World War. The sheet was issued as a supplement to the New Year issue of the boys’ magazine Shōnen. At that time, aircraft and pilots captured the imagination of many young readers, and becoming a pilot was a common boyhood dream.

The game begins with two young boys starting their training at an aviation school. After a series of tests and instruction, one of them qualifies as a pilot and sets off on a flight around the world. His journey takes him over the European Alps, where he even encounters the Thunder God. Although he suffers an accident, he survives, and after receiving a military medal from the British king, he reaches the goal of the game with his triumphant return to Japan.
