Colour sugoroku game sheet, 55 x 79cm. Folds repaired on reverse, some browning particularly on the reverse. A good copy.

This colourful and lively sugoroku game sheet was issued as a supplement to the January 1926 inaugural issue of the boys’ magazine Omoshiro Kurabu (面白倶楽部, Fun Club).

The game follows two rival detectives as they compete to solve problems and make their way through a series of adventures, including riding a motorbike, sneaking into a dance party and jumping from a moving train. The object is to return home to the family in time for the New Year celebrations.

Although the story is set in Japan, it incorporates a number of distinctly Western elements, including a fashionable hotel and a dance party, reflecting the growing influence of Western popular culture in urban Japan during the 1920s. Detective fiction was also becoming increasingly popular at this time, particularly following the appearance of Edogawa Ranpo’s first detective story in 1923. Ranpo’s pen name was derived from the Japanese pronunciation of Edgar Allan Poe.

A baseball game is printed on the reverse.
