Colour folding sugoroku game sheet, 79.5 x 54cm, with original envelope (20.4 x 14cm), some light wear, but overall very good.

This unusual and brightly coloured sugoroku game sheet was published by a local fire brigade in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. Its theme is fire prevention in the community, at a time when the disaster of the Great Kantō Earthquake of 1923 was still fresh in people’s memories. More than 100,000 people died in the earthquake and its aftermath, with the fires that broke out after the earthquake causing many of the deaths.

The game proceeds according to the order of iroha, the traditional Japanese syllabary. Each stop includes a catchy slogan promoting fire prevention. Some urge greater caution in daily life, while others warn of severe criminal and social penalties for those responsible for causing fires. The final goal is the achievement of a peaceful and happy family life, represented by three generations gathered together for a meal.

The original envelope features an illustration of a fire brigade in action.
